The Southern California Mormon
Choir will perform in the 2002 Lincoln International Choral Festival,
to take place in the beautiful and historic Cathedral in Lincoln,
England. Mr. Stephen Cleobury, well-known Director of the King's
College Choir and also the BBC Singers, will serve as a Festival
Director, as will Mr. Craig Jessop, Musical Director of the
world-famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The choir was selected
based upon recommendations by respected choral directors.
A complete program of scheduled workshops, rehearsals, sightseeing in
and around Lincoln will offer unique and stimulating opportunities for
the members of the choir. The festival will culminate with an
evening concert in the Cathedral before enthusiastic British audiences
on Saturday, July 6th.
The Lincoln Cathedral dates from 1072, with re-buildings after the
fire of 1141 and the great earthquake of 1185. Considered to be
the finest English Gothic cathedral and one of the largest, Lincoln
Cathedral is a stupendous human achievement. Mother church of
the Lincoln Diocese, it is visible from 30 miles away. The city
of Lincoln was the site of a Roman fortress and town.
Music in Great Britain has a long and prestigious history.
However, it is the present state of music and musical development that
makes Britain so preeminent in this domain. The long tradition
of concerts, theater, musical theater, religious choral performances,
pageants, carols, combine to give Britain an unusually rich musical
heritage.
George Frederick Handel was a transplanted German, and lived and
composed most of his major works in London. The list of
"native" English composers is impressive and includes such
luminaries as Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Arthur Sullivan,
Henry Purcell, Benjamin Britten, John Rutter, Sir Edward Elgar, Arthur
Bliss, John Ireland, William Walton, Andrew Lloyd-Webber, William
Byrd, Sir Malcolm Arnold, Lennox Berkeley, and others.
The Lincoln International Choral Festival is co-sponsored by Music
Celebrations International of Tempe, Arizona, a professional
festival/event organizer with years of both national and international
music festival expertise.
